Common auto electrical jobs in Wellcamp

Wellcamp is a rural locality about 17 km west of the Toowoomba CBD, home to about 350 people, the airport opened in 2014 and Wellcamp State School. With the Gore Highway section of the bypass carrying heavy freight through it, the work is a mix of commercial and country.

Back from a trip to a flat battery

Fly out of Wellcamp for a week and your car sits in the car park the whole time. Alarms, keyless entry and dashcams in parking mode all draw a little power, and an older battery may not have enough left when you land. Before you go, switch off the dashcam's parking mode and anything plugged into the 12V socket. Our guide on why a car battery keeps going flat explains standby drain.

Beacons and work lights for site vehicles

Vehicles working around an airport and a growing business precinct often need amber beacons, strobes, work lights and reversing alarms to meet site rules. Each accessory needs its own fuse, a proper switch and wiring that won't chafe through over rough ground. Our guide on how to wire a 12V relay shows how to run higher-current lights without overloading a switch.

Trucks on the Gore Highway freight route

Since the bypass opened in 2019, the Gore Highway runs past Wellcamp to the Warrego Highway at Charlton, carrying trucks that once went through Toowoomba. Most heavy vehicles run 24V systems, so 12V globes, cameras and chargers won't work properly without a converter. Corroded trailer connections and broken marker lights are the usual faults. Use globes and accessories rated for 24V.

Driving lights for the drive home

Once you leave the bypass, roads around Wellcamp are rural, unlit and shared with farm traffic. Good headlights and a set of driving lights make the run home after an evening flight much easier. Driving lights must come on only with high beam and switch off when you dip. Wire them through a relay and fuse, and have them aimed so they light the road ahead, not the treetops.

Wellcamp auto electrical questions

Will my car battery go flat if I leave it at the airport for two weeks?

A healthy battery in a modern car will usually last two weeks, but an older battery, a dashcam in parking mode or an aftermarket alarm can tip it over the edge. Turn off anything optional before you go. If your battery is more than four years old or has been slow to crank, have it tested beforehand, or keep a charged jump starter in the boot.

Can I fit a 12V beacon to a truck with a 24V system?

Not directly. A 12V beacon on a 24V system will fail quickly and can be a fire risk. Many LED beacons are rated for 12 to 24V, so check the label before buying. If you must run 12V accessories on a 24V vehicle, use a properly rated voltage converter with its own fuse rather than tapping into half the battery bank.

Local tip for Wellcamp

If you fly in and out of Wellcamp regularly, keep a lithium jump starter in the boot and charge it every couple of months. Before a long trip, turn off the dashcam's parking mode and unplug anything from the 12V sockets. It costs nothing and means you're not stuck in an airport car park on a cold Darling Downs night.
