Highfields

Highfields and the towns along the New England Highway north of Toowoomba are home to commuting families, acreage owners, farmers and Defence personnel. Most of the auto electrical work here is batteries, towing set-ups and accessories for vehicles that split their time between town, the range and the bush.

Suburbs in Highfields

This part of the range runs from the busy satellite town of Highfields, with its schools, shopping centres and new estates, through the acreage and Army community at Cabarlah, out to farming country around Meringandan and the country town of Crows Nest, about 44 km from Toowoomba. Highfields work leans towards family SUVs and short-trip battery problems. Further out it shifts to farm utes, stock and boat trailers, and 4WDs heading for the national park, lakes and bush tracks. Everyone shares the same highway, cold winter mornings and long summer drives.

Common auto electrical jobs in Highfields

Across the area the same few jobs come up again and again, though the vehicle and the reason behind each one changes from town to town.

Batteries that struggle on cold mornings

Sitting around 700 metres up on the Great Dividing Range, Highfields and Cabarlah see cold winter starts, and a tired battery is often the first thing to give up. Add short school runs and a car that sits in a carport all week, and the battery rarely gets a full charge. A load test tells you whether the battery, the alternator or something draining power overnight is to blame. Our guide on how to test a car battery explains what a healthy reading looks like.

Towing wiring for caravans, floats and trailers

Plenty of households here tow something, whether it is a caravan heading north on the New England Highway, a horse float, a boat for Lake Cooby or a box trailer full of garden waste. Trailer lights that flicker or fail are usually down to a corroded plug, a broken earth or a wiring harness that was never fitted properly. Heavier vans and floats also need a working electric brake controller, which should be set up and tested before a long trip.

Dual batteries for farm utes and 4WDs

On acreage blocks and farms between Meringandan and Crows Nest, the ute often runs a fridge, work lights, a UHF and sometimes a pump. A second battery keeps all of that running without flattening the starting battery. Newer vehicles with smart alternators usually need a DC-DC charger rather than a simple isolator. If you are weighing up the options, read DC-DC charger or isolator before you buy.

Air conditioning that fades in summer

Commuting down the range in summer traffic, or driving an hour to Toowoomba from Crows Nest with the windows up, puts a lot of strain on the air conditioning. Many faults are electrical: a failed condenser fan, a blown fuse, a faulty relay or a compressor clutch that will not engage. Those can be diagnosed and fixed by an auto electrician. If the system needs regassing or opening up, that work must be done by a licensed technician.
