Common auto electrical jobs in Greenmount

Greenmount has grown from about 340 people in 2006 to about 765 in 2021, and farming is still the main source of work. Utes and trailers do lots of short local trips, which brings its own electrical problems.

Utes that only do short trips

A ute that runs between the house, the paddock and town a few kilometres away never runs long enough to fully recharge its battery after each start. Over months that leaves the battery undercharged and weak. Testing it tells you whether it needs a charge or replacing. Our guide on how to test a car battery explains how, and a monthly charge helps a lot.

LED indicator conversions

Swapping old indicator globes for LEDs on a farm ute or trailer is popular, but it often makes the indicators flash fast. That's because LEDs draw far less current, and the flasher thinks a globe has blown, so it speeds up to warn you. The fix is usually an LED-compatible flasher or load resistors. Our guide on why indicators flash fast explains the options.

Burnt wiring after DIY jobs

Fitting a light bar, a pump or a compressor yourself is common in Greenmount, but undersized wire and missing fuses are a fire risk. Every accessory needs cable sized for its current and a fuse close to the battery. If you notice a hot plastic smell, melted insulation or a fuse that keeps blowing, stop using that circuit. Our guide on burning smells or smoke from car wiring explains what to do straight away.

Farm trailers and stock crates

Trailers that live in the paddock suffer from mud, sun and cattle rubbing against the lights. Broken lenses let water in, and the wiring along the drawbar flexes until it breaks. LED lamps in tough housings, cable clipped securely to the frame, and a plug kept off the ground will cut most faults. Test the lights before each road trip, not just once a year.

Greenmount auto electrical questions

Why are my indicators flashing fast after fitting LED globes?

LED globes draw much less current than standard ones, so the flasher unit reads it as a blown globe and speeds up to warn you. Fitting an LED-compatible flasher usually fixes it. On some newer vehicles the flash rate is controlled by a computer, so a load resistor or a setting change may be needed instead.

Is it safe to keep driving if I can smell burning plastic?

No. Pull over safely, turn the engine off and, if you can do it safely, disconnect the battery. Wiring that's overheating can start a fire quickly. Don't keep driving to get it home. Have the vehicle checked before using it again, and fix the cause, not just the fuse.

Local tip for Greenmount

If you're adding accessories to a farm ute yourself, buy the cable by its current rating, not by what's cheapest, and always fit a fuse or circuit breaker as close to the battery as you can. Most burnt wiring jobs auto electricians see start with cable that was too thin or a fuse that was left out.
