Common auto electrical jobs in Top Camp

Top Camp is about 9 km from the city centre, at around 580 to 630 metres above sea level, and home to about 900 people on rural-residential blocks. Big blocks mean extra machines and trailers, and the highway means every trip starts with a merge into faster traffic.

Ride-on mowers and shed batteries

On a Top Camp block, the ride-on mower is as important as the car, and its small battery often dies after a winter in the shed. Mower batteries are small and don't like sitting flat. Charge it before the first spring mow, keep the terminals clean, and check the charging circuit if it keeps going flat. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals helps with the most common cause of a no-start.

The trailer for tip runs and firewood

Box trailers on acreage blocks carry green waste, firewood and fencing gear, then sit in the weather between jobs. Dust from gravel driveways gets into plugs, and globes rattle loose on rough tracks. Fit sealed LED lamps if you're replacing old ones, and give the plug a clean and a spray of contact cleaner every few months. Make sure the trailer's earth wire goes to clean metal, not painted steel.

Merging onto the highway at night

Pulling onto the New England Highway in the dark means judging the speed of oncoming trucks and cars, and you need to be seen as well as see. Check that your headlights are aimed correctly, especially after carrying heavy loads that drop the rear of the car. Replace dim globes in pairs. Our guide on changing a headlight globe explains what to look for.

A battery light on the drive to town

A battery warning light that comes on while you're driving usually means the alternator isn't charging, not that the battery is bad. You may have only a short time before the car stops, so turn off the air conditioning, radio and other loads and head somewhere safe. Our guide on the battery warning light while driving explains what's happening and what to check.

Top Camp auto electrical questions

Why does my ride-on mower battery die every winter?

Small mower batteries have little reserve, and over months in a cold shed they self-discharge until they're too flat to recover. Some mowers also have a small constant draw. Charge the battery fully before storing it, disconnect the negative terminal, and top it up every month or so with a smart charger suited to small batteries. A battery left flat for months often can't be saved.

My headlights seem to point at the sky when the trailer is loaded. Is that normal?

A heavy trailer or load pushes the rear down and lifts the front, which raises the headlight beam and can dazzle oncoming drivers. Many cars have a headlight levelling dial to correct for it. If yours doesn't, or the dial doesn't seem to work, have the aim checked. Load-levelling problems are worth fixing before regular night towing.

Local tip for Top Camp

In Top Camp, the start of spring is a good time for a shed check. Charge the mower battery, test the trailer lights and look over any machine that has sat through winter for chewed wires or nests. Do it on a weekend before you need everything, rather than discovering a flat battery on the first good mowing day.
